To you, who are about to be initiated into ALPHA PHI ALPHA, we would say, we had enough respect and admiration for you to invite you to become a candidate for membership here. Our first step in ALPHA PHI ALPHA is taken in thoughtful silence. Then the Presiding Officer says: Silence, the background of all thought. The candidate is brought to a stop and all remain silent for one minute. Every member present remains in absolute silence. The Brother is then admitted with the candidate.
The Brother conducting the candidate shall say: A Brother of those within and a most humble servant of the laws they make. A voice within asks, after the knocks have been given: Who disturbs the peace and quietude of those assembled within? The candidate shall the be led to the door of the initiation room where the Brother conducting him gives the significant knocks. He shall be left in absolute solitude for a reasonable length of time. The candidate shall be conveyed to a place unknown to him. The candidate’s, features shall be bandaged beyond recognition, both because it will not in any way help to have him personally recognized, but more particularly to symbolize the complete loss of self in the actual work, the uplift of all men of all races, but in particular, the loss of self in the uplift of our people and our Brothers in ALPHA PHI ALPHA. (Teaching that out of ALPHA PHI ALPHA, men walk or stumble through business or trhough life, blindly missing much which should be seen., used and enjoyed.) The Oath of Secrecy shall then be administered by a Brother designated by the President. As the candidate advances, he shall suddenly be accosted and mystically addressed. When he arrives, the place may apparently be deserted and darkened. He shall be instructed to enter whether lighted or not. The candidate shall be directed to report at a very definitely specified place. It shall be illegal to take or use in initiation any step not hereinafter defined. Whenever and wherever a step is omitted, this step shall be carefully explained by the “Lecturer”, so that all ALPHA brothers will come through finally with the same lessons. The lettered steps (A, B, etc.) are elective, and may be omitted. The numbered steps (1, 2, etc) in the order of initiation are obligatory and must be taken by each and every chapter in initiating a candidate or candidates. This shall not be done in a brutal fashion. The only exeption of physical contact will be the three impressions at the end of the initiation ceremony. Theta Sigma also takes great pride in our sorority house, which is the only black greek-lettered sorority on Sorority Row at the University of Alabama. Its charter members were: Cheryl Clark, Kathy Elmore, Janice Green, Janet Horne, Wanda Jackson, Sammuetta Primus, Gayle Seller, Deborah Sommerville, Sharon Sykes, Deborah Taylor, Linda Tyson, and Gloria White. The Theta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was charted on April 14, 1974. Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards promotes unity and friendship among college women alleviates problems concerning girls and women maintains a progressive interest in college life and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 200,000 women in over 860 chapters. Today, that tradition has continued–internationally, nationally and locally.
After her incorporation as a perpetual body on January 29, 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha gradually branched out and became the channel through which selected college-trained women improved the social and economic conditions in their city, state, nation and the world. Through the years, however, the function of Alpha Kappa Alpha has become more complex. She viewed the Sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates. Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington, DC, where the idea of formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first Greek-lettered organization established in the United States by and for Black women.
